ating istorya.
For Theo.
Like with many stories, beauty comes through tragedy. The concept of Layunin came to fruition in 2018 shortly after the passing of our dear friend Theodore Hill. Theodore was someone who strived for excellence no matter what stared back at him. He always wanted more in life, never settled for less, and invariably tried to instill that very passion onto others around him - this project is dedicated to him and to anyone who may be struggling with mental health issues.
Layunin was founded by Vancouver based Filipino - Canadian, Andrew Alojado. Andrew spent most of his professional career working in multi-unit restaurants, working his way from dishwashing to restaurant development and eventually finding his way to one the largest food providers in North America.
Andrew found his calling when he was travelling Southeast Asia, he began studying unique flavours and gaining fresh ideas where he eventually landed himself back in his family’s hometown of Santa Rosa, Laguna, Philippines. Childhood nostalgia along with a profound respect for the cuisine set in, and after returning home from his new refined experience, he began creating modern variations of Filipino inspired desserts - this strategically became the building blocks to increase the awareness in our brand.
As we gained more and more traction, we showcased a wide range of Filipino main staples using Pacific Northwest ingredients as well as globally influenced renditions of Southeast Asian flavours that would pave the way to hosting multiple pop-up restaurants, private dinners and weddings.
Over the next year, Layunin would build relationships with local Filipino vendors that have been pivotal to the movement here in British Columbia, as well as a few non-profit organizations. In November of 2019, we hosted the very first Modern Filipino Market which highlighted Filipino owned small businesses that brought a range of food and beverage, fashion, arts and crafts and music.
After being on such an incline with the growth of our brand, we unfortunately put a halt in our operations due to the global Covid-19 Pandemic. Finally in what looks to be a brighter future, we have decided to move forward to bring this passion of ours to a brick and mortar location in hopes to support the Vancouver, British Columbia community in the Mount Pleasant area.
This project has been beyond us and has never been about building a restaurant - it’s about having a voice for our community, cultivating relationships with our fellow business owners, bridging the gap between young and old and most importantly preserving our heritage for the generations to come.
